The five meanings of a fraction

Published · Updated

A fraction like 3/4 can be read five ways: as part of a whole, as a quotient, as a point on the number line, as an operator or as a ratio. The symbol is the same, but each reading answers a different question and can give a different number. The table tells you which one to use, depending on what you are asked.

If this is your first contact with fractions, start with what fractions are, which explains the basic idea. This guide goes one step further: what changes when the same symbol is used in different situations.

The question each meaning answers, using the numbers 3 and 4
MeaningQuestionExampleModel
Part of a wholeWhat part of the total is it?3 of 4 equal parts of a bar are shadedDivided circle or rectangle
QuotientHow much does each one get?3 pizzas among 4 people: 3 ÷ 4 = 3/4 eachSharing
MeasureWhere is it on the number line?Three jumps of one quarter from 0Number line
OperatorHow much is that fraction of an amount?3/4 of 20 = 15Divide and multiply
RatioIn what proportion are two groups?3 boys for every 4 girls: the boys are 3/7 of the groupParts of the same kind

The deciding word is usually the preposition: “of a total” calls for part of a whole, “among” calls for a quotient, “where” calls for a measure, “of an amount” calls for an operator and “for every” calls for a ratio.

Same symbol, different referent

The notation a/b does not change, but what its two numbers stand for does. In part of a whole, the denominator counts the equal parts the unit is divided into. In a quotient it is the divisor, the number of people. In a measure it sets the size of the jump, and in an operator it says how many parts the amount is divided into before you multiply by the numerator. In a ratio it is no longer the total but a second part.

Reference texts cover several of these readings at once. English Wikipedia describes a fraction as representing a part of a whole, says that fractions can be used to represent ratios and division, and notes that a ratio is often converted to a fraction when it is expressed relative to the whole. The readings do not exclude each other: the point on the number line and the shaded part of a bar can have the same length. Nor are they a classification into proper and improper fractions, which describes something else, the relation between numerator and denominator, as the guide on types of fractions explains.

The same numbers in three word problems

With the numbers 3 and 4 you get very different answers depending on the question. This problem uses them three times.

Worked example: three word problems with 3 and 4

(a) 3 equal pizzas are shared among 4 people. (b) 3/4 of 20 seats are taken. (c) In a group of 28 people there are 3 boys for every 4 girls. What do you get in each case?

  1. Sharing, quotient. 3 ÷ 4 is three quarters, so each person gets three quarters of a pizza.
  2. Seats, operator. Divide by 4 and multiply by 3: 20 ÷ 4 = 5 and 5 × 3 = 15 seats.
  3. Group, ratio. The parts add up to 3 + 4 = 7 and each part is worth 28 ÷ 7 = 4 people, so there are 3 × 4 = 12 boys and 4 × 4 = 16 girls.
  4. Convert to a fraction of the total. 12/28 simplifies to 3/7, because the GCD (greatest common divisor) of 12 and 28 is 4.

Result: three quarters of a pizza each, 15 seats taken, and 12 boys, which is 3/7 of the group.

Check: 12 + 16 = 28, and 12 ÷ 28 ≈ 0.43, which is 3/7 and not 0.75.

The fraction of a number calculator solves the operator with any amount, and the ratio to fraction tool converts 3 : 4 into the fraction of the total.

When each reading is the convenient one

Part of a whole works when there is an object to cut or a set to count, as in fractions of a set. It requires the whole to be the same: the guide on the same whole explains why two fractions of different wholes cannot be compared by eye.

The quotient appears in sharing and is not limited to values below 1. Five bars among 3 people give 5/3, which is 1 2/3 each. The measure is the one that helps with ordering and with placing fractions greater than 1, such as 5/4 one jump past 1; the fraction number line tool marks the exact point. To draw part of a whole with several models, see numerator and denominator.

If you want the difference between ratio, proportion and fraction, the guide on ratio, proportion and fraction develops it. And if you are thinking about how to present these readings to others, teaching fractions offers a sequence of sessions. The what fraction tool helps you name the whole before calculating.

Frequently asked questions

Which meaning of a fraction is the most important?

None outweighs the others: each one answers a different question. Part of a whole is the easiest to draw, and quotient and measure are what let you treat 7/2 as a number. What helps most is being able to move from one reading to another as the problem requires.

How do I tell a quotient from an operator?

Look at what you know. With a quotient you share a total among some number of people and the result is the share: 9 shared among 6 is 9/6 = 3/2 each. With an operator you already have an amount and the fraction transforms it: 2/3 of 9 is 6. One divides, the other applies.

Is a rate like 60 miles per hour a ratio or a fraction?

It is a ratio between different quantities, miles and hours, and it reads as a quotient: 60 miles divided by 1 hour. Adding its terms to find a part of the total makes no sense, because miles and hours do not form one whole. Adding parts works only with quantities of the same kind.

Does a mixed number like 2 1/4 also have all five meanings?

Yes, once you convert it to an improper fraction: 2 1/4 = 9/4. From there it is nine quarters of a unit, the point 2.25 on the number line, the quotient 9 ÷ 4, the operator 9/4 of an amount or the ratio 9 : 4. Make that conversion before you calculate.

Which meaning is taught first?

There is no required order. Many textbooks start with part of a whole because you can draw it, but sharing 2 chocolate bars among 5 kids works as a starting point too. If the starting reading is the bar, the natural next step is the number line, which includes numbers greater than 1.
